vario-optics ag at Photonics West in San Francisco

It is amazing that we can already look back on 50 years of laser technology! Nobody would have thought that this technology would become one of the key technologies of the 21st century and that lasers would be used in a wide range of applications, including telecommunications, data storage, mechanical treatment, distance and position sensing and many more. And now, optical signal transmission and sensing are also entering the last few centimetres.

Pluggable optical backplane systemAlready three months have passed since we sent you our last newsletter. In the course of this period, we have again made progress in the development of our product technology. Furthermore, we have extended our network by attending several conferences and fairs.

Together with Siemens C-Lab (Germany) and Tyco Electronics (Netherlands), we developed a demonstrator for a pluggable backplane system.

The objective was to build up a demonstrator by using state-of-the-art technology as far as possible. The system is based on rigid-flex electro-optical circuit boards (EOCB) - a novelty! In addition to twelve waveguides, the flexible tails of the EOCB contain alignment structures which allow passive assembly of the MPX-connector system of Tyco Electronics. The system can be plugged and unplugged without active alignment. During the project, 2.5 GBit/s were transmitted and thereby the feasibility of such a system was impressively demonstrated. The system was first presented at IEEE Winter Topicals in Majorca (January 11 to 13, 2010) by Siemens C-Lab and Tyco Electronics and caused a great deal of excitement.

photonicswestPhotonics West 2010 was full of innovative and forward looking spirit. More than 1’000 exhibitors and 18’000 visitors attended the fair. vario-optics ag presented a paper on its technology at the “Opto”-conference, which was part of Photonics West. The fact that electro-optical circuit boards are now commercially available was positively noted by the audience. We were encouraged by several experts to go ahead with our vision. For us, Photonics West 2010 was a great success!

Climate ChamberBesides several customer projects, vario-optics also further developed its own production and test infrastructure. In January a climate chamber was installed, which allows measurements under different temperatures (-40°C to +180°C) and humidity conditions (up to 98% rel. humidity). With this equipment, we can test and further improve our products.

The climate chamber is also available for external usage. Please do not hesitate to contact us in case of interest.

We are currently preparing the SMT fair in Nürnberg. You are kindly invited to visit us at our booth (hall 6, 115F, June 8th - 10th, 2010). We are looking forward!
